Saturday’s Scottish Gas Scottish Cup tie at Tannadice sees a return to Dundee for a trio of current Spartans players including defender Paul Watson.
Watson made 44 appearances and bagged himself four goals during his two year spell for the Tangerines between 2018-20 and the opportunity to revisit familiar territory is one that the former United player is looking forward to.
“I loved my spell at United. Two years were unfortunately cut short because of Covid which was just a crazy time of uncertainty for everyone. I’m looking forward to going back to Tannadice and of course, happy to be back fit again and in amongst the squad.
“This is a brilliant draw for the club. It’ll be a good away day for us all and we are of course aware of just how a tough place to go it is. It’ll be a bit different from playing on the astro that we are used to and of course their pitch has been impacted by some amount of rain over the last couple of weeks, but it’ll be one we all look forward to and hopefully it’s a good day for everyone.
“One of my favourite memories of being at Dundee United was probably winning the Championship under Robbie Neilson and getting the club back to the Premier League. It was a big achievement and one we were all very proud of and we loved the time there.”
The Spartans of course met Dundee United in the Viaplay Cup in the summer of 2023 – their first competitive fixture since earning promotion to the SPFL, one Watson watched as an interested spectator.
“Actually, I watched that game from the balcony. I hadn’t signed yet, but the boys done brilliant to get the win that day. Obviously, it was a bit early in pre-season and Jim Goodwin wasn’t in the job long there. Obviously they’re a lot more settled now, so we have a completely different challenge, but one more really and forward to relishing.”
