The Spartans have played 7 matches on February 14th since they were formed in 1951. Here’s a quick look back at those fixtures.
14/02/1953 Spartans drew 2-2 with Murrayfield Amateurs in the King Cup 1st Round. The Amateurs taking the lead twice and Jimmy Beaumont coming up with the goal near the end to take the tie to a replay which Spartans won 4-3 a week later.
14/02/1981 Dunbar Blue Circle headed to the Capital and it was a positive afternoon for The Spartans ran out comfortable 3-1 winners, helping to cement their 3rd place in the final East of Scotland table.
14/02/1987 Spartans exited the King Cup at the 2nd Round stage at home against Gala Fairydean. A Jimmy McQuade free-kick just after the hour mark saw the Borders side progress in a 1-2 win.
14/02/1998 “Spartans break Whitehill hearts on Valentine’s Day” was the headline in the Musselburgh News as the City Park outfit won a tousy East of Scotland Qualifying Cup Semi Final at Rosewell 1-2. Coming from behind, Ross Middlemist equalised from the spot before going on to also score the winner. Spartans went on to lift the trophy, defeating Gala 2-0 in the Final.
14/02/2004 A week after their famous Scottish Cup run came to an end against Livingston at a packed City Park, Spartans made the trip to East Lothian to take on Ormiston the League Cup R1. It wasn’t the best of starts going a goal behind however a double from Keith McLeod and further strikes by Phil Johnson and Craig Manson saw Spartans ease through 1-4.
14/02/2006 The sombreros were out in full force at City Park ten days previous as the East of Scotland held First Division outfit St Mirren to a 0-0 draw in the Scottish Cup fourth round in front of a reported crowd of 3,346. That set up a Valentine’s Day midweek trip to appropriately named Love Street for the replay. Unfortunately, the romance of the cup came to halt as the Paisley outfit scored three without reply, with Spartans keeper Kevin Brown in fine form.
14/02/2015 On a weekend that delivered the latest box office hit Fifty Shades of Grey, Valentine’s Day offered just one shade of Red and a steamy scene – namely the early warm shower for its unlucky recipient, Mikey Bruce – in the 0-2 South Challenge Cup defeat against Vale of Leithen, managed by former Spartan Mark Lamb.
