SPFL 2: Blanks fired in battle against the Binos

13 March 2025

Waugh?  What was it good for? Absolutely nothing each as the siblings cancelled each other out in a stalemate at the Vanloq Community Stadium as Spartans and Stirling Albion share the spoils in a 0-0 draw.

An early stramash inside the Stirling Albion box following a pair of corners saw Spartans come out the traps looking to build on the weekend’s win over Bonnyrigg Rose.

A strong shout for a penalty from the Spartans faithful was waved away by the Referee after Liam Morgan looked to have been upended inside the box.

The best chance of the game thus far came when Morgan showed a fine touch to send Hamish Ritchie on a run, with his attempt ruffling the outside of the net as it went narrowly wide.

Penalty shout number two was met with a similar outcome as the first when Cammy Russell went down in the box under a combined defender / keeper combo, only for a goal kick to be awarded, much to the Spartans’ playmaker’s frustration.

Bailey Dall made his Spartans debut on the half hour mark when he was called on to replace Callum Booth who tweaked a hammy in a defensive track-back.

An early second half free-kick saw Blair Carswell forced into a relatively textbook save as the tourists aimed to strike against the run of play.

Kieran Watson found himself at the edge of the opposite box shortly after however his half volley, half attempt on goal couldn’t trouble the scoreboard.

A double swap saw Mark Stowe and Blair Henderson replace Liam Morgan and Jamie Dishington as the Gaffer run the changes.

The Binos were starting to come onto a game as the sands of time ticked down and the home defence needed to bring their ‘A-game’ to the party.

Hamish Ritchie did have the ball in the net however it was a short-lived hurrah with the Ref pinging him for a foul in the build-up.  No complaints for the Spartans man and the opening goal continued to remain elusive.

A further double swap found Lewis Hunter and Brogan Walls come on for Craigen and Russell as the game entered its final ten minutes.

One final piece of drama came in the dying moments when Kevin Waugh’s robust challenge saw him take man and ball in the box.  A corner kick was the outcome with the visiting bench going radge at the Ref demanding a more favourable outcome.
