Scottish Cup: McNulty makes return to Tannadice for shot at Tangerines

17 February 2026

Tonight’s rescheduled Scottish Gas Scottish Cup tie sees a return to the City of Discovery for Marc McNulty as The Spartans take on his former employers Dundee United in Round 5 of the coveted competition.

Ahead of the trip to Tannadice, McNulty reflected on his time at tonight’s opponents, “I had two spells out on loan at Dundee United from 2020 however during those I unfortunately had two of the worst injuries I’d picked up during my career.  Basically, I took my hamstring off the bone and had to get surgery on that then to make things worse, later on I done the ligaments in my knee a couple of games before the end of the season so it was quite a rough time for me.

“I remember we finishing 4th and got into Europe as a result.  Unfortunately, with the injuries and such like, there weren’t too many goals or significantly memorable moments me personally in a stop-start season, but I remember the St Mirren game when we were trying to get top six. I scored the header really late on to get us into the top six so that was probably the pick for me – and an important one for the club too.

“Looking back at moments in your career, you know you sort of remember that goal and you can always remember the celebrations behind the goals when that went in and how much it meant to the club.”

Ahead of the tie, McNulty, now in his second spell at the Vanloq Community Stadium was confident the experience on offer within the Spartans squad would see the SPFL 2 leaders take the game to their Premiership opponents.

“I think there’s a lot of boys in our squad that have been on good cup runs in the past that have been part of teams and that have beaten several teams in the top leagues so I think there’s a confidence going there from the boys.

“We go there under no illusions, that it’s going to be an easy game because there’s obviously quite a few levels between us, but it’s a cup game and it’s a one off.  We see the magic of the cup sometimes where lower league teams beat higher opposition so why can’t that be us?

“Both teams will want to play football although it remains to be seen how much of that you can play on the pitch, but maybe just come down to who wants it more on the day.”
