Weekend Preview – Under 20s up for the Cup & Sammy’s side head to Clyde

21 February 2025

The Spartans weekend kicks-off on Friday night at the Vanloq Community Stadium where Les Atkinson’s Under 20s take on Oakley United in Round 4 of the Combined Challenge Cup.

After an eventful friendly to maintain match minutes last week, it’s back to competitive action for the current custodians of the cup and they will be looking to build on the momentum of their recent league victory over Caledonian Braves.

Oakley dangerman Aiden Mackenzie will take some watching by the Spartans defence as the striker knows his way to goal for the EOS Central Region side who currently sit in 3rd position, just three points behind Dunipace who they defeated a couple of weeks ago.

Route to Round 4:

Spartans: R2 v Armadale 2-1, R3 v Whitburn 9-0.

Oakley: R2: v Dunbar 0-7, Kilsyth Athletic 3-3 (3-4 pens)

Saturday sees Douglas Samuel take his side to New Douglas Park as The Spartans visit Clyde in the third meeting between the sides this season.

Last time out saw a Cammy Russell double help guide Spartans to victory in a win dedicated to Paul Watson who had the high of opening the scoring before a nasty ankle injury unfortunately ended his afternoon moments after the interval.  We’re pleased to report that Paul is doing well on his long road to recovery.

That win maintained Spartans unbeaten record against the Bully Wee in the SPFL albeit there being four draws alongside the two victories achieved.

Hosts Clyde will undoubtedly look to keep to the same XI that have been undefeated in their last two league outings, including last week’s comeback for a share of the spoils away to Peterhead.
